Botox Myths Debunked: What You Need to Know Before Your First Appointment
If you've ever heard "good Botox looks like nothing" and wondered what that actually means β let me clarify. Botox is one of the most culturally misunderstood aesthetic treatments, surrounded by myths that prevent people from making informed decisions.
I'm Adriana Natividade, Aesthetic Specialist at Asunshine MedSpa in Mineola, NY β a speaker at Harvard Medical and the MARC Institute, with 15+ years of clinical experience. I've administered thousands of Botox treatments. Here are the myths β and the truth.
Myth #1: "Botox Will Make Me Look Frozen"
The Truth: Good Botox makes you look like yourself, just refreshed. Bad Botox makes you look frozen. The difference is technique. Botox relaxes muscles just enough so you still move naturally β you just can't create the deep creases. A frozen face happens when too much Botox is injected, placement is inaccurate, or the provider doesn't understand facial anatomy. I approach every face individually, assessing how you naturally move and customizing dose and placement accordingly. My patients tell me: "People noticed I look rested. They didn't notice the Botox." Individual results vary.
Myth #2: "Botox Is Addictive"
The Truth: Botox isn't chemically addictive. It's a neurotoxin that wears off completely in 3-4 months. If you stop, you return to baseline β not worse. What is real: once people experience looking refreshed, they choose to maintain it. That's preference, not addiction.
Myth #3: "Botox Is Only for Older Women"
The Truth: Botox works beautifully as a preventative. I treat patients from their early 30s through their 80s. Starting in your 30s prevents expression lines from becoming permanently set grooves. Age isn't the variable β your goals are.
Myth #4: "Botox Results Are Obvious"
The Truth: The best Botox results are the ones people can't identify. Obvious Botox signals poor placement or too-high doses. I use enough to soften lines without erasing expression. Your face should still feel like your face.
Myth #5: "Botox Has Serious Side Effects"
The Truth: Serious side effects are extremely rare when administered by a trained professional. Common experiences: mild headache (1-2 days), slight bruising or swelling at injection sites (fades in 24-48 hours), temporary asymmetry as Botox settles. I'm trained in facial anatomy β nerves, arteries, safe injection points β and use sterile technique with appropriate dosing.
Myth #6: "Botox Lasts Forever"
The Truth: Botox lasts 3-4 months, then your body metabolizes it completely. This is a feature: no permanent commitment. If you don't love results, stop β and you're back to baseline in a few months.
Myth #7: "Botox Prevents All Wrinkles"
The Truth: Botox prevents dynamic wrinkles (lines from movement), not static wrinkles from sun damage, volume loss, or texture. For fine lines from sun damage: PRP and microneedling or laser. For sagging: fillers or Endolifting. I often recommend a combination approach for comprehensive results.
Myth #8: "Botox Results Are Immediate"
The Truth: Full results take 7-14 days. Days 1-3: subtle softening. Days 4-7: more apparent. Days 10-14: full effect. Schedule at least two weeks before important events.
